B. A. Heimlich

“I draw on my personal experience, having been exposed to musicians, photographers, poets and works of art starting at the tender age of five. I never forgot the magical feeling of watching the performance from back stage. Many of my works appear as dreamlike images where fiction and reality meet, well-known tropes merge, meanings shift, past and present fuse. Time, sound and memory always play a key role in my paintings. I want to amplify the astonishment of the spectator and pull them into my thoughts. If you look long enough you might find symbolic images or figures lurking in the shadows. My hope is that you feel the weight of the magical moment you are witnessing and embrace the silence.”

Betsy Heimlich has been working in the arts for nearly 36 years. Her traditional training started in the early 80’s at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh in graphic art and design. She continued her studies in 2009 at The Ohio State University where she received her BFA with a distinction in art followed quickly by her master’s degree from OSU in 2013. She continues to learn and work with artist from all over the world.

Betsy is a multidisciplinary artist well versed in painting, murals, photography, drawing and sculpture. She is known for capturing the spirit of the subject through use of color and movement. When working she considers the viewer and Heimlich tries to increase the dynamic between audience and author by objectifying emotions and investigating the duality that develops through different interpretations.

Her work has been featured on the cover of ABQ magazine and Mosaic magazine. She was included in the “Women in Art: A Portrait” by Ardine Nelson. Though she exhibits mainly in Ohio she has also exhibited in New Mexico, Virginia and Southern California.

My Philosophy ….

Being a fine artist is truly my calling. This is a profession that you must love and be willing to bend and evolve to survive. I create visual imagery for a living and I feel fortunate to have a career that I deeply love. My art is an expression of my experiences, my dreams, my thoughts and my life.
